Referencing a report from The Information, CNBC reports that Facebook will announce its cryptocurrency later this month, and will even allow employees working on the project to take it as a salary. It has been reported before that Facebook is working on a USD stablecoin cryptocurrency.
In a highly publicized reorg about a year ago, Facebook moved the VP of Messaging Products David Marcus to being exploring opportunities with blockchain. Since then, it's been reported that Facebook has been building its own cryptocurrency USD stablecoin. One potential application of this cryptocurrency is allowing users of Messenger and WhatsApp to store USD and transact with each other.
The Information also reports that Facebook is soliciting third-party organizations to act as "nodes" to help manage the cryptocurrency, and has discussed charging $10 million for the privilege.
