QuadrigaCX, the largest cryptocurrency exchange in Canada, announces that it has lost access to $150 million worth of cryptocurrencies owned by its customers, when CEO Gerald Cotten died in December 9th in India from complications of Crohn's disease. Cotten was the only person in the company with access to the exchange's cryptocurrency wallets holding customer and exchange funds and the company alleges in court documents filed on January 31st that access to these wallets were lost with Cotten's sudden death.

Quadriga's website has been in maintenance mode for 3 days leading up to the January 31st announcement.

Bloomberg notes that experts were brought in to break in Cotten's computers and were met with limited success.
